Hugging could be bad for your (neck) health

A client came in with soreness and feeling of instability in the neck region.
Sure enough when we tested, everything seemed less than happy, but mostly low tone. When asked what had happened, their preschooler had given them a really tight hug around the neck whilst they were bent over to reach their level. Whilst uncomfortable at the time, they didn’t think much of it until the following day when the discomfort kicked in.

In the end we found the right SCM over working, and primarily the right longus colli and spinalis muscles (along with 8 other essential core and neck muscles) under active.
Resolving these issues helped a great deal with the neck pain, but the sensation of instability was still present.
We checked for cervical compression / decompression. In this instance decompression of the neck was an issue. We recompressed the joints (very carefully) and things improved significantly.
This will need to be monitored over time.
A lengthening of the ligaments, and a tendency for a joint or joints to stay in a decompressed state came mean that further, medical intervention is required. Hopefully if they’re vigilant with their homework and stop the child swinging on their neck, this can be avoided 👍🏻
