Leaky Gut often starts with some form of damage (from physical trauma) or stress (from stress hormones or repeated exposure to certain allergens) to the intestinal walls.
This damage can cause an increase in the size of particles that can get through the intestinal epithelial layers.
Once through and into the blood stream our ‘acquired immune system’ kicks in. Large particles are recognised as antigens (our immune system does not recognise them as part of us).
Any large particle can be recognised as a foreign antigen including amino acids, nucleic acids, many carbohydrates and even some larger lipids.
Typically pollens, grains and micro-organisms such as bacteria, cause the largest responses.
Once the body encounters something for the first time, it stores that information for the future in order to respond faster and stronger should they encounter it again, as a means of protecting the body.
This is the basis of our immunity from disease and even when the gut lining is healed we may still end up having immune responses to certain foods as they pass the peyers patches in the intestines which are a special immune satellite station that could causes a repertory immune event.
Volume of foods, fluids, activity levels and emotional status can also play a big roll in the body’s response, and the healing process.
Understanding what’s going on is so important in being able to treat, prevent and know what outcomes can reasonably be expected 👨🏻🎓🧠💪🏻
