A client presented with low back pain (like so many do), but this time we had the added complexity of a shortness of breath.
It started on waking one morning in the week, and other than a days gardening the day before, nothing unusual had happened.
The history in this instance was crucial. The gardening had involved a lot of bending and lifting whilst rotating. Pelvic stability was my initial thought, but how does this relate to low back pain and breathing issues?
The iliolumbar ligaments and quadratus lumborum (QL) embryologically form from the same tissue. The QL is a major muscle of expiration as well, so this is where we started looking.
A compensation pattern of overactive right oblique iliolumbar ligament and under active left iliolumbar ligament, QL and iliacus.
Correcting the dysfunction, and focused breathing drills resolved the back pain, and the ability to get a “full lung full of fresh air”.
