I’ve written about the issues of tight and I’ll fitting bra’s before.

But did you know it’s not just bra’s which can cause you issues.
With the arrival of the skinny jean, and a tendency to for people, men and women, to favour tighter clothing, we are seeing the effects in clinic on a regular basis.

I’ve been treating a client for a running related injury on one ankle, I’d had the tight clothing conversation previously but they remained unconvinced. I asked them to wear their normal clothing to the session, as I wanted to demonstrate the effects we’d been discussing.
They duly turned up after work in their skinny jeans, a top and some boots.
Removing the boots, we started testing the muscles of the lower leg, and core.
EVERYTHING FAILED. There was no neuro connection between her motor control centre, and the muscles we were testing – much to their surprise.

I asked her to change into the clothes she would wear for the treatment session. Almost everything was now back on line, only the tissues we were working with in relation to the ankle remained.

So what happened as this had taken maybe two minutes to resolve, and involved simply changing her clothes?
The tight, compressive clothing they were wearing, was seen as the ‘threat’ by the body, moving her away from a parasympathetic state, towards a sympathetic state. This means they were approaching a fight or flight like state, which in turn means their neurology was behaving in a sub optimal manner. This can leave the body open to injury, compensation and potentially pain if the body can not respond appropriately to what is being asked if it.

As was pointed out to me, they run and work out in loose fitting clothing so it should be fine. Whilst this is of course true for those activities, work for them, as for so many of us, involves sitting at a computer for prolonged periods, often in high pressure environments with deadlines looming etc. This frequently involves compromised biomechanics, and static postures for prolonged periods, all of which the body really doesn’t like. To go through this in a neurologically suboptimal manner can itself cause issues.

How do you know if your clothes are causing you issues? (okay the ‘killer clothes’ phrase was maybe a bit too harsh 🤣)
Just look at your body. If you remove your clothing and the marks from the clothing remain for a prolonged period, they’re too tight, and shouldn’t be worn as a norm.

The images show the marks about 10 minutes after the clothes were changed. They remained largely the same for the whole 60 minute session.

Be kind to yourself, opt for looser fitting clothing (and footwear).
