This weekend was definitely dominated by hip issues! Most were in relation to the internal and external rotators. 🧘♀️
A couple of people had pinching and popping hips though 😳
Clicking or popping during movement tends to locate to the front, back or side of the hip. If it’s particularly bad, it can feel like it’s coming from somewhere else. The good news is, it’s rarely the hip joint doing the clunking.
One client said their sacroiliac joint had started popping during certain movements. The SIJ is a major player in both spinal and pelvic stability. A little investigating later, and we discovered a very tight obturator internus (hip rotator muscle).
As you know just because a muscle is tight, it doesn’t mean it needs releasing. We test to see if it’s the appropriate action to correct the dysfunction.
In this case it was, we activated her TFL and they were much happier, no pain, and no clicking when I asked them to replicate the movements which caused the popping initially. 🥇
A second client came for a non hip related issue. After some detective work we found their knee issues weren’t very knee oriented at all. A breathing dysfunction, and subsequent loss of intra abdominal pressure had caused their hip to compress – jamming the femoral head into the acetabulum – as a stabilisation strategy.
It was a strategy which clearly wasn’t working too well as there was knee pain evident.
Interestingly the only indicator that the hip was involved at all, was a pinching sensation when the knee was pulled close to the chest – not something which is done that frequently 🔍🏆
