3 months post natal a new client presented with extreme low back pain (9/10), tracking down both, but mainly the left leg. They were having difficulty walking – penguin posture / shuffle with a noticeable forward lean.
We checked for spinal nerve involvement, which was cleared, but they were completely unable to stand on just one leg.
Her breathing was off, and we tracked the issues down to the Caesarian scar, there were both limbic and structural issues which needed addressing. These were cleared, and I coached her through the breathing drills she would need to do to keep things going.
5 days later, she walked into clinic with a smile on her face. I asked how things had been “fabulous”. Now we need to look at some pelvic floor stuff to make sure the breathing remains optimised, but I think it’s fair to say we were both happy with the results so far.
The low back and pelvic pain was a symptom of a core stability issue, itself the result of dysfunctional breathing mechanics. The dysfunctional breath was however, a symptom of a nervous system issue – the root cause which needed addressing.
Our breathing mechanics are so important, and we spend a lot of time working on breath in clinic, but it can also be a symptoms of something bigger going on.
If you’re doing your breathing drills, yoga etc and you find your body tightening, you start to be become anxious, hyper aware, or focusing on past events it’s time to get yourself assessed ❤️
