Professionalism

This week has been a struggle. I’ve had two conversations with clients both reporting back to me their interactions with NHS professionals. And I’m struggling to meet their comments with professionalism.

Professionalism and integrity are two things I hold in high regard. I have helped countless individuals avoid unnecessary surgeries, come off unnecessary prescribed medication, and many many more actually recover from their surgery / injury etc fully once they’ve been ‘through the system’ and discharged.

I don’t bad mouth a profession whether it be mainstream or not. There are good and bad practitioners in all walks of life, but to say someone and or the techniques they employ are all pointless is, not helpful! And don’t get me started on the ‘oh they’re holistic’ comments (usually accompanied by the eye roll) – like it’s a bad thing to look at the person as a whole rather than, dare I say it, taking a more myopic approach.

I get you like your evidence based approach, I do. I was a scientist originally and I lived and died by what I could prove or disprove. But guess where all the new techniques came from? People looking at things differently, working on and refining techniques until they were ready to invest tens of thousands to get the research in place which hopefully proved what they found in clinic. Then, you’d be allowed to use it.

What works for one person might not work for everyone but coming at things with an open mind is by far the best option surely.
Just because it didn’t work for you (or worse, you have zero experience of it) doesn’t mean it won’t work for someone else.
Let’s all be polite and respectful of each others professions, sure question, but come from a place of wanting to acquire knowledge, not ignorant superiority. Lastly respect people’s choices because when we all work together the greatest things can happen.
